Picking a place to take photos is a difficult thing to do. If you don’t spend a lot of time taking photos, you may assume that you can get good photos anywhere. Or you may feel the opposite, like you don’t know enough to pick a spot. I find that it is often overlooked or forgotten by my clients, but I also know that the best photos I take come from well-planned shoots with well-picked locations. That is why I put together this checklist of things you should look for in a good photo location. To help you pick the spot where we will take photos that you will love for the rest of your life.
If you are like most of the people we shoot with, you probably haven't been the subject of many professional portrait shoots. You may have some ideas about how photo shoots go from movies or television shows. Maybe you have flashbacks to getting school photos in front of a gross looking backdrop in elementary school. Maybe you have shot with other photographers before, or maybe you haven't given it a second thought. Wherever you are coming from, we want to put you at ease by giving you an idea of how we do things.
One of the most common questions that people ask us is what they should be doing to prepare for their portrait session. And you might be asking yourself the same thing. What are the things you need to think about beforehand that will make an appreciable difference in the way your photos turn out? What are the things that you might not normally think about, but that can have a big impact on your final images? You are paying good money to get your picture taken, and in most cases the end result is going to publicly displayed somewhere, so you want to look your best. So here it is. We’ve compiled a list of the most important things for you to think about before your portrait shoot. It is up to you to actually do them.

We needed Senior High School pictures for our twins, Senior College pictures, and wanted some family pictures taken as well. Dillon not only gave us some beautiful portraits but, more importantly, got some that really showed our kids’ personalities. Dillon was even willing to drive around RMNP to all of our favorite spots and work around the crazy crowds. We highly recommend Light and Lens.

We thoroughly enjoyed our photo shoot with Dillon and his bride! She kept us laughing while Dillon shot great spontaneous pics. Loved their teamwork and how they put our fam at ease.

“Dillon and Anni are friggin' adorable. During my portrait session, I brought my fiance along (for moral support, since I'm kind of afraid of cameras - think Chandler Bing), but we both felt very comfortable with them, immediately. They are awesome about experimenting with fun backgrounds and locations, which is great when you're looking for something more sophisticated than generic, stock photo portraits. If you, too, tend to clam up around cameras, Light + Lens is a great solution! Thanks, you guys!”

“I shot with Dillon over the weekend in Boulder, and had the most fun I’ve ever had with a young photographer. I was very comfortable with him right away and he was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. He knew exactly where to stand, how to pose and how to use the light to his advantage, and he was so right about shooting during sunrise, when the sun was fresh, The pictures came out increible and I would be incredibly honored to work with him again.”
